Mezzanine Bedroom and Office Space
For this project, we were tasked with redesigning the room layout to retain the bedroom, increase storage capacity, and install a new office space. Despite the high ceilings, it was a challenging design task to add a new mezzanine level while preserving enough headroom in both the office and bedroom areas above.
To accomplish this, we meticulously built a steel and timber frame to support the thin (4 inches) mezzanine floor. To optimize headroom, we opted not to plaster the underside of the mezzanine, leaving the beams and supports exposed. The steel work and timber supports were painted black, reminiscent of old Tudor timber frame buildings and in line with the room's black, white, and beech plywood color scheme.
The bespoke staircase, clad in 35mm beech ply, served as a focal point of the project. Strategically placed LED strip lights ensured adequate lighting without visible light sources, eliminating glare. The end result was a striking modern design that was both functional and aesthetically pleasing, blending new elements with a nod to the past.
